With the practice of yoga we will be able to develop more flexible bodies and more peaceful minds. Numerous studies have shown that with the regular practice of yoga we are able to keep our bodies healthy: yoga increases flexibility, balance, posture, muscle tone and circulation. It reduces stress; by practicing the asanas (postures) we massage our internal organs, and squeeze life-giving blood into nooks and corners of our bodies – such as deep in our spines. We also activate our lymphatic system which is responsible for draining fluids and toxins from our bodies. Yoga also helps us release certain good hormones in our bodies such as endorphins and serotonin which gives us a general feeling of well being. The controlled breathing practice in yoga stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system counteracting the stressful ‘flight or fight’ response we experience in our daily lives. Overall, the practice of yoga will make us feel healthy and balanced by uniting more closely our bodies and our minds.
