Yoga, translated from the Sanskrit word yuj, means to unite, to connect. The practice of yoga is simply the practice of the connection between body and mind via asanas (postures) and pranayama breathing. Yoga originated in India approximately 5,000 years ago. Yoga started to come to the U.S.A. in around 1947 when Indra Devi, a disciple of Sri Krishnamacharya, a renowned Indian yoga teacher, opened a yoga studio in Hollywood, CA. Since then, slowly over time, yoga has become popular, increasingly so in recent years as we have become more health conscious as a society.
